If you really want to know how many test series should be taken before prelims and mains before the UPSC, it all depends on your preparation, such as how much you have studied, and once you are studying any topic from any particular subject, it is possible that you must try some test series based on that topic in order to assess how much you have learned while studying that topic.
As an example, during my preparation, I took the mains test series from EDEN IAS called "GATI," which gave me the chance to answer questions according to topics. For instance, they have a proper schedule for daily tests, like how they divided the topic of parliament from polity into topic-based sections, which helped me prepare for this topic in a systematic manner. The primary advantage I gained from completing this test series was the ability to also prepare for the prelim’s exam.
