PEP, or post-exposure prophylaxis, is advised in a number of situations when there is a high chance of HIV exposure. The following are the main scenarios where using PEP is recommended:
High-Risk Exposure to Unprotected Sexual Intercourse: If you engaged in unprotected vaginal or anal sex with an HIV-positive partner or one whose status is uncertain.
Condom Failure: When a condom pops or comes loose during intercourse with an HIV-positive partner or an unidentified person.
Sexual Assault Immediate Risk: In the event that you have experienced sexual assault and there exists a possibility of HIV transmission (for instance, if the perpetrator carries the virus or if their status is uncertain).
Needle Sharing Drug Use: If you have shared injectables, such as needles, with an individual whose HIV status is uncertain or who is HIV-positive.
Unintentional Needle Stick: When you unintentionally prickle yourself with a needle that could have been used by an HIV-positive person.
Healthcare Workers: In the event that you receive a needlestick injury, come into contact with blood or other body fluids from a patient who is HIV-positive or whose status is unclear, or both. Watch full video for more information.
